Faculty Members at One More University Push Back at Online Programs

Professors at Eastern Michigan University are objecting to its partnership with a private company to market and support online programs, making it the latest institution to grapple with questions about the quality of online instruction.

As an online program manager, or OPM, Academic Partnerships has contracted with Eastern Michigan to market and recruit students for its online programs. Typically, OPMs — which also include 2U and Pearson Education — build a college’s online enrollment and bring in more revenue than the college arguably could bring in on its own. But critics argue that such partnerships can result in a lower-quality education and fewer consumer protections.

Unizin Updates: A Change in Direction and a Likely Change in Culture

After the resignation of Unizin's CEO (Amin Qazi) and COO (Robin Littleworth) that we reported last week, we can confirm that the key issue was a change in direction for the consortium driven by the board of directors. Our information is based on on-the-record interviews with Qazi and Littleworth and additional interviews with Unizin staff, member institution staff, and outside sources. We believe this change in direction led to the resignations and will likely also lead to a change in emphasis on various Unizin initiatives.

Former ICMR Chief Launches Pure Portal at Manipal University

The Pure Portal is an enterprise research management solution that aggregates research information from various sources and brings on a single platform to ensure the data that drives strategic decisions is trusted, comprehensive and accessible in one place.

Manipal University will be the first university in India to have this portal. It will showcase data to researchers and support national and international collaborations.

Lecture Capture

Indiana University Enhances its Learning Experience

For the last five years, the university has used hardware and PC-based software lecture capture systems to cover [their] classes. The systems were proprietary, difficult to operate and maintain, expensive (hence not every room was equipped for lecture capture), did not have media management, and lacked the ability to allow other video content to be integrated into their environment.

First evaluating video management systems, they decided on Kaltura with its Open Capture standard support, media management, and destination options.

Nova Scotia College of Early Childhood Education Chooses D2L's Brightspace LMS

D2L announces that the Nova Scotia College of Early Childhood Education (NSCECE) has chosen its Brightspace Learning Management System (LMS) to reach more learners across the province to address a shortage of early childhood educators.

"To attract more Early Childhood Educators into our field and provide training upgrades to those currently in the workforce, we need to connect with learners far beyond our campus and offer a high-quality learning experience and the best content," said Derrick Tobin, Executive Director of the NSCECE. Mobile Technology Gives Nonprofits a Fundraising Edge

Fundraising is a critical component of any nonprofit’s daily operations. But for too long, fundraising has been managed in a largely offline or desktop-computer-oriented approach. Some nonprofits, however, are transforming their fundraising efforts to integrate and maximize donor opportunities with mobile technology.

To reach smartphone-loving millennials, the university (Northwood University) launched its first SMS fundraising campaigns three years ago, allowing graduates to donate by text message. Today, mobile donations account for 14.8 percent of all funds raised this year.

“Millennials respond to text messages, and it makes it very convenient for them to give; and for us, it’s an inexpensive way to reach out without using postage or having to print anything,” says Justin Marshall, the school’s vice president of advancement and alumni relations.
