Illuminate to Sunset Student Information System in 2021

Christine Willig, CEO of Illuminate, recently informed the company’s customers of the cessation of Illuminate Education’s student information system (SIS) by the 2021 school year. She recommends users to replace Illuminate by other systems, naming specifically Aequitas, Aeries, Infinite Campus and Skyward.

The SIS portion of Illuminate is to shut down in order to more directly align with “student achievement.” This is a similar statement as the one made by Pearson when it sold its student information system, PowerSchool, in 2015.

According to an analysis done by LISTedTECH, Illuminate’s SIS is used in 3 percent of districts with fewer than 4,999 students and 2 percent share of districts with more than 5,000 students.

Giving customers two years to prepare for data migration, when they usually plan five years out, may be a major headache for many, says Dan Carroll, co-founder and chief product officer at Clever, a company that helps schools manage user accounts for education software.
